Being the mom of 2 tween daughters, I have always been really passionate about having a really open relationship with my girls. That’s why I was so excited when I was chosen to be a U by Kotex Tween Mom Ambassador! Talking to your daughters about their periods and the changes that puberty brings is something I am really passionate about.
When I was a kid, my family really didn’t talk about all of that “stuff.” I got my period around the age of 14, and when I did I was so embarrassed that I wrote my mom a note. I couldn’t even bear to come face to face to tell her. Talk about mortifying.
That’s not how I wanted my daughters to feel when they got their period. My oldest daughter is now 13, and got hers around age 11. Since I knew kids were starting younger and younger we started having “the talk” around age 8-9. That way if she did start young, she would know what to expect. We have kept open talks ever since. I think the most awesome part was one time I asked her if she had any questions, and she told me “nope, mom I knew by talking to you what was going to happen. It’s cool!”
Once she started, right away I headed toward U by Kotex. I had been using them ever since they came out, and I figured the comfort and the great colors would work just as well for her! Being a frugal family, we aren’t normally a brand specific household, but this is one brand that we stick by. No need to mess with a good thing!
Now that my oldest is prepared and on her way to becoming a woman, my youngest daughter, who’s nine, is next. She hasn’t even started to shown signs of puberty yet, but I know by my relationship with her sister that having open, honest discussions free of embarrassment is the way to go. Kids nowadays talk at even younger ages, and trust me you don’t want your daughter learning about sensitive topics like this from her friends. Goodness knows what they are going to tell her!
There is a great video that U by Kotex has that tells you first hand what an impact having these talks with your daughters can have. It’s even a great ice breaker to watch with your daughter if you haven’t had the nerve to bring the talk up yet.
Just know being the mom of a tween daughter, you are NOT alone! There are so many moms, like myself, that have been there and are willing to help! Plus the Kotex website has information, questions, answers, and resources to help make the talk that much easier! They even have a Tween Kotex website that is just for your daughter.
Have you had the talk with your daughter yet? What tips do you have to share? What questions are you worried about your daughter having? This is a great place to get those questions answered!
Look forward to more information about having the talk with your daughter here each month! Just remember having the talk doesn’t have to be embarrassing!
I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by KotexTween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate
