crashers

Have you ever been down on your luck and forced to make a decision that might change your life? That is exactly the situation in Lindy S. Hudis “Crashers”. Based on a true story this exciting book follow the tale of Shari and Nathan. Everything seems to be going perfectly for them, but in a day everything changes.

Newly engaged, Shari and Nathan are dreaming of the big promotion that he’s been working on. Instead, he is met at work and accused of fraud then promptly fired. Things get worse for the couple, and then encounter a man that promises big money and to turn their lives around.

Both out of work, they decide to change “careers” and try their hand at staging car crashes to bilk the insurance companies. It’s exciting and dangerous, and it just might be the ticket they need to survive. All of this is great, but is it worth the danger that comes with it?

Will they strike it rich? Will they end up in jail? You’ll have to read Crashers to find out!

MY TAKE

I loved this book. I am a junkie for true crime kinds of stories. I found the writing very easy to read, and she spared no details without boring you to tears. I literally couldn’t put the book down.

If you are a fan of true crime books, or just want to try something different, I would highly recommend Crashers. It’s a great read, and it will definitely make you think. How would you approach the situation if you were offered “easy money”?

Dadgum Good Garlic and Herb Deep Fried Turkey

GarlicHerbFriedTurkey(picture)

Being from the South, there is always a little bit of my heart, err stomach, that loves something deep fried.

This year Mr Crunchy and I thought we would do a trial run and try a deep fried turkey recipe. We have never done it before, but I have watched enough Spike TV to know that unless you have the Fire Department on speed dial that you never fry a frozen bird. (even if you are frying WAAYY out back)

With Thanksgiving coming up, what could be better than a deliciously succulent deep fried turkey recipe. Frying your turkey isn’t the healthiest option, but it is the most amazing turkey that I have ever had! The skin is perfectly cripsy, and the meat lick it off your chin juicy!

If you are looking for a deep fried turkey recipe, you have to try this garlic and herb deep fried turkey recipe from “Dagum That’s Good, Too!” by John McLemore! This recipe is the best turkey I have ever had! Here’s what you have to do to make your bird hit of Thanksgiving this year!

Ingredients

1 fresh or frozen turkey (1o to 14 pounds) Remember frozen turkey plus fryer equals your house becomes a flambe!

2 gallons cooking oil, preferably peanut oil

1 (16 oz) bottle Butterball Garlic and Herb Turkey Marinade or your favorite brand

Butterball Garlic and Herb Turkey Seasoning or your favorite brand.

Directions

THAW TURKEY.

Pat turkey completely dry on outside and inside of cavity with paper towels.

Using a marinade injection syringe, inject 1/2 cup marinade in each breast.

Inject 1/4 cup marinade into each leg and thigh.

Sprinkle turkey generously w/ turkey seasoning, completely coating inside and out.

Place turkey, breast side up in fryer basket. Slowly lower basket into hot oil. Fry turkey 3 to 4 minutes per pound. Lift the basket from the hot oil slowly. Insert the meat themometer. When it reads 165 degrees, the bird is done.

Allow the turkey to rest and drain in the fryer basket for 10 minutes before carving.

Book Review: Real Women Love to Eat

Real Women Love to Eat

Real Women Love to EatAs a culture we are so weight obsessed, it’s no wonder that most that most women have no clue what they “should” or “shouldn’t” eat. With Real Women Love to Eat, you can  take those two words right out of your vocabulary. It’s a breath of fresh air!

No matter where my weight has been, I have, and will, always love food. I will never be one of those women that could care less about eating. This book embraces women that realize that food is to be cherished and celebrated, not scorned. It was amazing to finally find a book that gets it. You don’t have to eat carrots all day to love yourself and love your life. You can love food and still be healthy. You don’t have to give up food in order to love your life.

The book takes you week by week through the “Real Moms Love to Eat” plan. Before you judge, this isn’t another diet that restricts what you can have. Nor is it one that tells you EXACTLY what to eat. There is a lot of freedom in this plan. It’s based on liberating your mind from all those do’s and don’ts we think we are supposed to say when it comes to eating.

I mean come on. What diet plan tells you to each chocolate and something you love every day during the first week? This book does! It’s about taking back your power, and building a strong, healthy relationship with food!

The plan runs over the course of ten weeks. It’s purpose is to let you realize that food isn’t the enemy. You can enjoy food, make succulent dishes, and be happy. It addresses both what you eat, and the things that hinder your relationship with food.

After the ten week plan, there is a great collection of recipes in the back for you to get started with. These aren’t things you “have” to make, but just general suggestions to get your started on rebuilding your life with food. If you are looking to improve your relationship with food, without giving it up, this book is must read.

Springtime Urban Gardening: Don’t throw it out, grow it out!

Spring is the time when the world blossoms back into life. No longer will you or your neighbors be hibernating. It’s time to dust off those gardening gloves and spades and get ready to grow our own garden. It’s not only an amazingly rewarding hobby, but it’s also an incredibly frugal one!

With my library card in tow, I recently headed to my local county library in search of books to get me into the spring spirit. Loving my new backyard, but realizing it’s sunless pastures really won’t warrant an outdoor garden, I was on a quest for anything and everything to do with “urban gardening.”

“Urban Gardening” may sound like it comes with some type of karate belt, but it’s really away for people to garden in super small spaces. My space isn’t small, but my areas of sunlight are so I am prepared this spring to put on my “urban gardening” warrior sash and promise not to throw it out, but grow it out!

When you were a kid did you ever ask your mom what would happen if you swallowed those orange seeds in your lunch? I know I did! Well, this urban gardening project is really going to inspire your inner child. Did you realize that though mom swore those seeds wouldn’t make orange groves sprout out of your tummy, you can actually grow a lot of plants indoors straight from the foods that you eat! When I picked up a copy of Don’t Throw it, Grow it, I was fascinated by all the possibilities for my little ninja urban garden.

My husband and I had just returned from the store, after the library of course, and had great bounties of produce in hand. We planned to just do our usual routine of unpack, rinse, and consume  with all the yummy fruits and veggies that we had in our midst. It wasn’t until I cracked open and read the knowledge in Don’t Throw It, Grow it , that I realized I actually had the makings of a bountiful urban indoor garden in my refrigerator.

I dare you to peer in your fridge look at what fruits and veggies you have that you could actually grow indoors! Did you know that you can actually grow pineapples from the ones you buy at the store? Don’t believe me? Well here’s how to do it!

Grab the crown of the pineapple and twist until it comes off.

Then peel the bottom leaves off of the crown until you have a 1 inch stub. You will see little brown stringy looking things under the leaves. This is the start of the roots.

Once it’s peeled, place the pineapple top in a glass of water and place 1 t of activated charcoal.

In about four weeks the routes will have grown approximately 4 inches.  Once this is done, transplant your plant and you are ready to start growing your own pineapples!

There are so many things you can grow very easily. So before you go to throw those onions, garlic, potatoes, or other fruits and veggies away make sure to see if you can use them to start your very own indoor urban garden. It doesn’t just make your home blossom with foliage, but it’s a great way to reduce your grocery costs as well!
