Living an active lifestyle is a huge part of how my husband and I parent. It’s really important that our kids understand the need to be active and how taking care of their bodies is so vital to being healthy. That’s why we are always looking for  ways to engage our children’s interests.

My husband, being an ex-Marine, is a huge mixed martial arts fan. Although our kids are a bit young to watch MMA fights, we do teach the discipline in training to our kids. That way they know the sky is the limit. Mr. Crunchy and my son spend tons of time outside playing football, racing each other, or doing other sports activities to keep physically active. Our son is always on the go so this is such a great way to harness all of his extra energy!

With our active lifetsyle, we are always looking for ways to clothe our son. He is constantly going through shirts and shorts. When we found out about the MMA Elite line of clothing at Walmart, he was really excited. Our son really looks up to all the MMA fighters and the training that they do to be a fighter.

Raising an empowered child fits right into  the philosophy of being an MMA athlete. It’s not all about the fighting, but also about the discipline it takes to train. When my husband first introduced me to MMA fighting, honestly I wasn’t a fan. I had heard all about the blood on the mats, and frankly it grossed me out. When I dug a little bit deeper, I actually found that MMA wasn’t just about the cage and the ring. It was a lifestyle about discipline and dedication. The MMA fighters today are actually great role models for kids like my son. I was amazed to see one of the top fighters, Rampage, very active in a non-profit Choke Out Cancer. Last year, they were gracious enough to meet a bunch of their fans at Walmart stores across the country.

Since understanding a little bit more about the MMA lifestyle, I decided to embrace my son’s need for positive male role models. He just fell in love with the MMA Elite line that is offered at Walmart stores and exclusively online at MMA Elite. We took him to the local Walmart, and we were able to find two great shirts that fit him perfectly. They are great for running around, and anything that he does while trying to live that MMA athlete lifestyle.

My son used to be full of “I can’ts.” Now that he is active, and has a passion for MMA athletes, he knows that he can if he puts his mind to it! It is amazing to see a child come to this realization, that anything is possible if you put your mind to it!

This is a very interesting view on MMA. I’ve always thought of it as ridiculous and actually a horrible thing for children to watch. But after reading your article (and having a young son), I may have to rethink my attitude towards MMA and do a little more research on it. Thank you.

    • Crunchy Frugalista says:

Trust me I didn’t feel this way when I first heard about MMA, but after looking more into it it’s more about discipline than the fighting. I was actually happy to have my son have them as role models after looking at all the good some of them do.

  2. Emily says:

I love your spin on how MMA teaches discipline and having an active lifestyle.

    • Crunchy Frugalista says:

Yep, an active lifestyle is so important. They are definitely required to be in great shape to be a fighter.

  3. My son is a huge fan of MMA. It’s a great way to increase self confidence.

    • Crunchy Frugalista says:

Glad my son isn’t alone! He LOVES anything MMA. He was super excited with his t-shirts. I love seeing the confidence he is getting.

  4. Nikki says:

I’ll have to look into this for my son! He did karate before but we got out of it because it was too expensive.

  5. I like this. My oldest son can have the “I can’ts” sometimes and what a great way to instill confidence while also getting rid of his “I’m boreds”!!!
