Ways to Avoid Stress During Party Planning Season + GREAT Giveaway!

aura cacia

Disclosure: I did receive free products from Aura Cacia to facilitate this review, but the wit and genius are 100% my own.

Party planning season is right around the corner. It’s time for weddings, graduations, and of course summer parties! Parties can be a great way to spend time with your family and friends, but if you are the one doing all the planning it can be really stressful. Honestly for me that’s why Mr. Crunchy and I usually keep our parties pretty small and intimate.

aura cacia

When I get really stressed out, like gonna pull my hair out stressed out, I pull a few tools from my stress relief tool box. One of those tools is my essential oil collection from Aura Cacia. I say collection because I have been using their essential oils for years. A friend of mine back in California was an herbologist and got me started using essential oils to improve my life.

Since I tend to be a bit of a stress bucket, I try to keep things in the house that are soothing. When I am in my office working or planning my next party, I get out my favorite Aura Cacia blend to relax me a bit. (Trust me it works) One of my favorite things to do for stress relief are these tips:

  • Add 3 drops of ylang ylang to sweet almond oil to create a natural perfume.
  • Place 1-2 drops of ylang ylang on pillow at night for sweet dreaming.
  • Add 7-10 drops of ylang ylang to tub for a relaxing, sensual bath experience.
  • Combine 2 drops ylang ylang and 4 drops bergamot per ounce of water for an uplifting mood mister.aura cacia

Aura Cacia has added some pretty awesomesauce new products to their line throughout the year. One of my favorites is the new aromatherapy room diffuser. They have these great reusable pads that you can put drops of your favorite essential oil on and let them waft through your room. Mine is in my office. It’s a great blend of lavendar and ylang ylang to calm my stress ball butt down.

To learn more about Aura Cacia, make sure to check out their website and their social media channels

Now for the really exciting part! You can get to win your very own Aura Cacia “Choose Calm” kit! This great kit includes:

  • Ylang Ylang III Essential Oil
  • Euphoric Ylang Ylang Massage Oil
  • Sensual Cinnamon & Ylang Ylang Foam Bath
  • Euphoric Ylang Ylang Mineral Bath
  • Aromatherapy Room Diffuser

Happy Fifth Anniversary, Mr. Crunchy (plus Giveaway!!)

Olive Garden

“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Olive Garden. I received a gift card to facilitate my review promotional item as a thank-you for participating.”

It’s amazing how fast time flies when you are having fun. Mr. Crunchy and I are going to be celebrating our anniversary on the 27th of this month. It really doesn’t feel like it’s been that short amount of time. I am not a hopeless romantic, but I will say that I truly have a soul mate and best friend in Mr. Crunchy. He’s the only man on this planet that would voluntarily put up with me every day ;) .

Olive Garden

Most people don’t know this, but we actually met via Match.com. The funniest part is we had actually met in person first and didn’t realize it. It’s actually quite a funny story, one that Mr. Crunchy doesn’t let me live down!

A Match Made in A Bar?

About a month into our engagement a friend of mine told me she couldn’t believe I was marrying him. This statement bewildered me, because they had known each other for years! Just making sure I wasn’t about to marry a psychopath, I asked her to elaborate.

Earlier in the year she had taken me to a bar to have some fun. We ran into a bunch of guys she knew and she was trying to introduce me because I was feeling really shy. (Hard to believe I know). There was this tall goofy guy there with this really obnoxious laugh, and I made fun of him ALL NIGHT LONG! When I say all night, I mean for HOURS! It wasn’t until she was reminding me of this bar tirp that I realized that that tall goofy guy was now my FIANCEE! Mr. Crunchy to this day, still gives me heck about that night!

Enjoying One of Our Favorite Restaurants: Olive Garden

Every year for our anniversary we try to have a nice date night together, but since I am going to be out of town for the LA premiere of Iron Man 3 we decided to head to one of our favorites spots to celebrate a little bit early. We always seem to end up at Olive Garden when it comes to our date nights together. Mr. Crunchy always picks on me because I get the same dish every time. (Why mess with a good thing!?!) Even writing this post about our dinner, makes me want another round of their shrimp alfredo! I can never finish the whole plate, but man I enjoy trying.

When we went this week, I guess they have this cool new promotion called “Buy One Take One”. Basically you get to buy an entree, and then they give you one to take home too! (Now that is talking Mr. Crunchy’s language) There were several dishes that he had to choose from, and it was only $12.95. He loved pointing out that his meal was cheaper than mine and he got double the food.

Olive Garden

We splurged and got the calamari for appetizer. I could like the plate, I love their calamari. I, of course, had shrimp alfredo and Mr. Crunchy had Mezzaluna Ravioli with Five Cheese Marinara to eat and Spaghetti with Four Cheese Meat Sauce to take home. (He was quite a happy camper with the left overs)

He is truly the love of my life, and I was happy to see that even our new home in Minneapolis had Olive Garden because I have so many fond memories of their restaurant. We always seem to end up there whether it’s for big events like our anniversary or just a quick meal while out shopping! (The manager really made my day before left by giving us a coupon good for our next visit ;)

Olive Garden

I am proud to say that hubby and I have survived the first five years of marriage, and I hope we can put up with each other for many, many more! Happy Anniversary, baby!

Now Onto the Giveaway!!!!

Now for the part you guys are going to love! We are giving away a $75 Olive Garden gift card to one lucky winner! Just enter the entry form below to win!

3 Tips to the Perfect Family Movie Night

Family Movie Night

Family movie night is an honored family tradition each week at our house! It’s something that we have done with the kids since they were really little. It actually started out as a way to have some frugal fun when Mr. Crunchy was unemployed a few years back, but it’s turned out to be something that all of us love to do even now that the kids are getting older.

Want to know the keys to having a successful family movie night? Then make sure to read the Crunchy family’s 3 tips to the perfect family movie night! I asked the kids to write down some of their favorite things about family movie night and share them with you so you can have an awesome time too. I really thought I knew what they were going to say, and I did get one right, but my kids really surprised me with the other two tips!

Family Movie Night

Family Movie Night

1. Bring on the munchies: Each week make a great munchie to share as a family. The Crunchy kids love cooking as a family, so before we start our family movie night we decide what we are going to make for the treat that week!

One of their favorites is the popcorn bar! What’s a popcorn bar? Well, it’s where you air pop some popcorn and then set up some great toppings so each person can make their own popcorn their own way! Our kids all have very different tastes, so it’s the best way to be able to get them to all enjoy the same snack! Check out some of their favorite toppings:

Family Movie Night

  • Shredded Parmesan
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Herbed butter
  • Cinnamon and sugar
  • Raisins
  • Garlic powder

2. Get comfy: In our house this means bring on the jammies and the blankies. All three of my kids got footed jammies for the holidays, and EVERY family movie night they don their favorite pair and grab their favorite blanket to snuggle up on the couch. You think they would grow out of it as they have gotten older, but they haven’t. I think they like it even more. Ok, I confess I like the jammies and blankies too!

3. Make picking a movie fun: After reading up about your movies choices on sites like, Find Your Inner Critic by Rotten Tomatoes, make picking movies fun. Having five family members means we have five different opinions on what we should watch. Rather than having a feud, we make it fun! Don’t be afraid to get creative either. Here are some suggestions from the Crunchy kids.

  • Pick from a hat
  • Put movies on floor and have your pet pick by which one they walk toward
  • Arm wrestle for your favorite title
  • Play rock, scissors, paper and winner gets to pick

Our family was really stoked to find out about Find Your Inner Critic. We are such avid movie lovers that after a while you have to search high and low for new movies. For a while that meant wading through some really mediocre movies! Thanks to Find Your Inner Critic, we don’t have to do that. We can spend 15 minutes or so before movie night scanning for movies that we will love. This new site is already one of my favorites!

Next time you are planning a family movie night, I would make sure to use Find Your Inner Critic by Rotten Tomatoes so you won’t get stuck watching a yucky movie! That’s the worst! Who said that family movie night had to be the same boring thing over and over again, right!? If you check out Find Your Inner Critic and follow the Crunchy family’s tips, each and every movie night is sure to be a blast! We’ve been doing it for years, and haven’t had a week yet that wasn’t as great as the last!

Family Movie Night

At Pop Secret, we love movies as much as you love movies. That’s why we created the Find Your Critic tool with Rotten Tomatoes. It helps you figure out which movie critics you should listen to. All you have to do is rate some movies and the tool figures out which critics share your taste in movies. It even helps you follow your critics’ new movie reviews and recos. So when it comes to enjoying movies, the only thing you have to worry about is which kind of Pop Secret to make. Check it out!

Crunchy Pups are Finally Flea Free: Thanks FREE Vectra Sample!

happysmaller

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Vectra flea & tick control for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

When we moved into our last home in Indiana, it was on a beautifully wooded lot. I was so excited! What I wasn’t prepared for though was all the fleas that came with the creatures that lived in our wooded lot. No, I am not saying I have fleas, but my fur babies sure did. LOTS of them! It was awful!

We tried everything we knew to try; diatamaceous earth, Frontline, you name it! Nothing seemed to get rid of these super bugs. My poor babies could get no relief. That’s when I set out for Google to see what I could find to help my poor little things.

As soon as began my search, I came upon this great video about Vectra flea and tick control. Check it out.

I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a try, since nothing else had worked. So, I read a little bit more about Vectra and what it could do for our flea problem.

I really liked a lot of the great benefits of Vectra for my dogs. Vectra promises to:

  • Start killing fleas and ticks within 6 hours
  • Protect your pet with one monthly dose
  • Repels and kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, biting and sand flies, lice and mites (excluding mange mite
  • Protect your dogs as young as 7 weeks old.

Vectra was exactly what we were looking for, so we tried a free dose of Vectra flea & tick control. I am happy to report that BOTH of my fur babies are FLEA FREE! Now we just dose them once a month to help keep them that way! I never want to have to go through that again.

The cool part for your guys is that you can also get a free dose of Vectra flea & tick control plus enter to win the Vectra Sweepstakes! You could also win a $100 gift card to use on your next vet visit too!

Minnesota: Our New Home in the Snowy North

home

When we moved from Florida to Indiana four years ago, people looked at us like we had four heads. I guess I got that because it was a MAJOR climate change, but I really didn’t expect the same reaction when we told people we were moving to Minnesota.

Lucky for us, we are here after a great 10 hour road trip. We are still waiting on our stuff but are all settled in our new home in the snowy north. Luckily enough for us, it’s the end of winter here, and now we just have to wait for the snow to melt and spring to show up.

home

It was a bit nerve racking, but we rented this house without ever seeing it in person. (Terrifying experience, but not too bad if you do your homework) Jenny, our rental agent, was/is absolutely amazing and made the experience very pleasant, and we were able to find a house that was just PERFECT for our first year up in Minnesota.

After wading through, what seemed like, 15 million offers to wire money to Nigeria, we were able to find a great three bedroom home near the public transportation, Mall of America, and only 15 minutes from Mr. Crunchy’s new job! It’s in a quiet little neighborhood, and we can ride our bikes to the local library. (Yup, we are dorks only here one day and already have our library cards)

I think the best thing about this house is the fact it has a LARGE family room in the basement that we are letting our girls share. It’s almost the whole size of the bottom floor. Our son gets his own room which is on the top floor, and we get the main floor of the house, which makes it easier on us because the only bathroom is on this floor.

basement

We are really close to the Minneapolis Airport so I have to get used to hearing planes fly overhead, but it’s actually a bonus because we can hop the light rail and head straight to the airport rather than having to pay to park there!

The best part for me is that I have my very own office! A whole room that I can call Crunchy central! It even has the door to keep the kids out. I had my own office in the old house, but it didn’t have a door it was just a giant room. This room is big enough to even put my crafting table in. It’s going to be like my own mini mom cave! Granted right now it has a computer sitting on the floor, but I am sure it will be fabulous when it is done!

Don’t even have a desk, and already blogging away ;)

Moving to an area where you have no family can be slightly terrifying, but I think Mr. Crunchy and I have it down to a science. This move so far has been rather decent. I am expecting a few hiccups, but I am just glad to have a place to call “home” and a new place to explore. I can’t wait to share all of our new Minnesota adventures with you!

Moving Day Jokes: Moving Stinks You Might as Well Laugh

Moving Day Jokes

Moving Day Jokes, when you are moving they are a  must! Moving is really right up there with getting some teeth pulled, so I figured to make our move a little bit more fun that I would share some of these great moving day jokes! This weekend we will be packing, sorting, and filling up a really large moving truck and realizing just how much CRAP that we own. I am really beginning to think that minimalist living is the best way to go. I hope that we don’t ever have to move again, EVER!

The Crunchy Family is off to the Land of 10,000 Lakes

104_0715

2012 was an interesting year for the Crunchy family. It was filled with lots of surgeries, moving boxes, friends and family. Looks like 2013 is already off to an interesting start as the Crunchy family is packing it up and moving to the land of 10,000 lakes! (For those of you that don’t know that’s the state of Minnesota)

When we moved from Florida to Indiana in 2008, people thought we were certifiable. (Well, we may be but not for that reason) Moving then was about moving to a place with FOUR seasons, not just hot, hot, and holy heck it’s hot. Indiana has been a good adventure for us, and we have made some really great friends in the Hoosier state, but something has always been missing.

Crunchy Kids having fun with the heat lamps at the Light Rail stop

Our desire to move to Minnesota started last year when we visited during a conference. We absolutely loved it. Mr. Crunchy and I spent almost a week up there. The people were so nice, the area was great, and there was tons of things to do outdoors! Ever since then Mr. Crunchy has secretly been eyeing for ways to move us up there.

The thing that really prompted us to move was our youngest daughter. She has been sick for over a year with really severe psoriasis. Her allergies are getting to be unbearable, and now we have found out that the medication she is on to help control her psoriasis might be heading her towards kidney failure at 10 years old.

Minnesota is home to the Mayo clinic, one of the top hospitals in the country, and we are hoping that they will be able to help us manage our daughter’s illnesses and figure out exactly what is going on.

Leaving My Best Friend Sucks

The heartbreaking part is that my best friend is getting married in October, and I am her matron of honor. She was supposed to be getting married in our back yard. We’ve only known each other for about a year, but she’s truly one of the best people I have ever known.

She’s been feeling ill this week, and I couldn’t find a time to tell her in person because of the flu. I feel absolutely awful, but we have to take care of our daughter. It’s one of those times that being an adult absolutely stinks. I am going to miss her like crazy, and hope that I can still be there for her when it comes to the wedding. I will just have to do it from afar. (Love ya girl!) Telling her was one of the hardest things I have had to do because good friends are so hard to find! Being the awesome person that she is, she completely understood, and still loves me anyway even though we are moving 10 hours away.

On the Road Again

Now the next week is just about packing, finding a place to live, and getting everyone geared up to move to a great new home. There is so much to do and so little time, it’s like a giant whirlwind is happening all at once. I am surprised that I am keeping my head on straight.

So here’s to new adventure, and hopefully our last home for a VERY long time. (We keep seeming to say that, but I think we are just nomadic by nature) Here’s to hope, new friends, and new opportunity!

You guys have any moving or sanity tips to share with me? Because goodness knows I could use some extra sanity right now!

10 Great Stocking Stuffers For Women

Stocking Stuffers

Stocking Stuffers for women is what you want to know about? Well Crunchy guys, I know there are a a few of you out there, THIS is a post that you need to pay attention to. Ladies, this would be an awesome post to leave up for your man (or woman)to see to get awesome stocking stuffers this year.

Stocking Stuffers

1. The Body Shop Massage Oil: This is a bath product that just keeps on giving. Nothing is better than a nice massage after a long day. Attach a cute note that they can redeem for their massage. (Hint: this for them to get a massage guys, not to get used on you ;) )

2.  A nice watch: I am not normally a traditionalist when it comes to stockin stuffers, but a really nice watch is a great stocking stuffer even for “crunchy” gals like me. (Hint Hint Mr. Crunchy)

3.  Coupons for time off: The best part about this one is it doesn’t cost you anything but your time. Most women take care of others before they take care of themselves. Write out a cute note for one DAY she can have the WHOLE day off. No kids, no chores, no responsibilities. Trust me, it will make mama happy.

4. Gift cards to her favorite restaurant: I don’t know a woman that doesn’t love nights when she doesn’t have to cook. Grab a couple gift cards  to her favorite restaurant.

5.  Ghiradelli chocolate: There’s not just any chocolate that hits a girl’s heart. Ghiradelli is THE best chocolate out there ( I will concede that Godiva and Lindt are awesome too) Trust me chocolate is a way straight into her heart.

6. Kindle Fire: This is one of my FAVORITE things that Mr Crunchy has gotten me for the holidays, and it’s slim enough you should be able to stuff it into a stocking. It’s books, movies, music, and games all in one (PLUS there is a HOT deal on it today)

7.  The World’s Softest Fuzzy socks: These socks are amazing. They are soft and fuzzy and feel like a spa day on your toes.

8. Fashion Scarves Scarves are a fabulous way to accessorize without breaking the bank. Kohls has a great deal on fashion scarves right now!

9. Eyes Lips Face: This makeup is outstanding, and it’s really frugal too. Take a look around her makeup and see what she might running low on, and throw in a few fun pieces too!

Stocking stuffers for women

10. When in doubt, gift cards! If you have NO idea what to get a woman after reading all this, giving her gift cards to her favorite stores is always a safe bet. It’s not the most personal, but it will definitely keep you out of the dog house. Not sure where she shops? Here’s a hint look at your bank account.

Ladies, what are you hoping for in your stocking this year? (Might want to grab some paper to take notes, hint, hint)

Small Business Saturday: Stoked about Holiday Pop Up Market!

Fort Wayne Downtown Holiday Fest
Holiday Shopping

Don’t they look excited to shop??

Ok, call me super dork when it comes to small, local shops. Yes, I am that person that goes nuts over flea markets and that cute little hole in the wall diner that makes your eggs exactly the way you like them. Small businesses like those still remember that it’s about the people and your community, not just the almighty dollar.

Mr. Crunchy and I have been in Fort Wayne for a little over four years now, and we are STILL discovering great local stores and shops. They have some really neat ones here.

It wasn’t until this year that I found out about the holiday trolley thingy they have going on all over town. Just for holiday shopping and Small Business Saturday, they have this cute Holiday Pop Up market that’s going to have tons of my favorite farmer’s market vendors and crafters. Squeee! (Can you tell I am excited?)

I think Mr. Crunchy’s going to have to hold the purse, oh he’s gonna LOVE that, because I might just spend a wee too much if he doesn’t. Can you blame me? There are too many cute goodies to pass up, and they only come around once a year, so a girl’s gotta take advantage, right?!?

As you can tell from my love of unique gifts, I love things that aren’t mass produced. It means so much more to buy someone something that is unique as a gift than something you picked off the shelves of Walmart. (No hurt feelings, Walmart.) If it’s unique or handmade, you KNOW some love went into that gift. No I don’t mean weird Christmas socks, “unique”. I mean those neat handcrafted goodies that would be perfect for someone on your shopping list! Something only they would find amazingly divine!

Of course my girl, Jewels, will be at the Holiday Pop Up Market selling her amazing soaps. I hear she has made some fantastic lip balms and lotions too. Do you think she will let me be her sample girl for the show? There is supposed to be lots of homemade crafts and other goodies. At these cute little markets, I usually go with people in mind rather than gifts I am looking for. That’s usually because you never really know what you are going to find. It’s kind of thrilling that way!

Fort Wayne Downtown Holiday Fest

Fort Wayne is really awesome for finding a way to support small businesses. Our Downtown Improvement District is putting on the holiday shopping trolley and the market. They even foot the bill for the trolley transportation all around town.

This works fabulously for me because, as my driving foot is not operable, I can’t drive myself. Plus, why waste my gas money if I don’t have to?

You know you are jealous about the awesome program my town has. Does your town have holiday markets like this for the holiday season or Small Business Saturday? Do you plan to shop small on Small Business Saturday? What are you hoping to score?

Looks like it’s gonna be a fun day for Mr. Crunchy, me and the kids. As long as my wallet survives the fun, I think we will all be ok!

Positive Sprouts: Learn more about healthy eating with BGCA and Amway

bgca

Positive Sprouts Boys and Girls Club

You guys know my family and I are try pretty hard to eat healthily. Ok, so “try” is in there, but we are getting better. I was really excited to see that Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Amway have joined up together to spread the message of healthy eating!

Amway and Boys and Girls Club of America have started the Positive Sprouts program. This is a great program that makes healthy eating fun! It gets kids involved from the beginning of the food cycle. It also enables BGCA to receive $30,000 in grants to 4,000 clubs nationwide!

TEACH KIDS TO LOVE GARDENING

Amway has donated 150 garden in a box kits to BCGA clubs that show interest in the program! These great boxes get kids involved in the gardening process. My kids and I love to garden, and it really helps them get excited about their food. My youngest daughter loves to grow cherry tomatoes. Often they don’t even make it into the house.

In our community garden, we grow asparagus and strawberries. Those are the two things my other two children love, and seldom make it to the plate either. At least they are loving to eat great nutritious foods.

BGCA HELPS KIDS LEARN AND GROW

This program touches my heart not only because it shows kids how to garden, something we love, but also helps kids in need. My children went to the Boys and Girls Club of Ocala when I was a single mom. They had great programs for the kids to participate in, and I didn’t have to break the bank to have them in an after-school program. That’s why I am always happy to spread the word about the great programs at BGCA.

Small Business Saturday: Handcrafted Artisan Work when you shop small!

Small Business SAturday

In the days of the Internet, cell phones, and tablets everyone is on the go almost 24/7. Every thing is mass manufactured, and there are alot of anecdotes about the “good ole days.” It’s no wonder that we are such an anxious bunch.

Body Alchemy Bath Works

National retail chains are these massive stores that you can get lost in for days. You could shop there 50 times and not get the same cashier twice. Don’t get me wrong mass retailers definitely have their benefits, but when I am looking for top quality and something with a personal touch I make sure to shop small.

There is nothing better than discovery a favorite local bakery, or a artist’s studio filled with handmade pottery. These are the places that still fill their businesses with passion and care when hand crafting their artisan goods. Every once of their being goes into that loaf of bread or hand painted glass.

One of my favorite ways to shop local during the summer is the Barr Street Market. It’s a great farmer’s market every Saturday that has breads, fruits, veggies, and tons of local handcrafted soaps, jewelry, and pots. It’s really one of my favorite places to get lost on a Saturday morning.

As I told you guys last time, my best friend makes the most amazing hand crafted soaps, lotions, and lip balms. She is humble and tells you, “Oh, it’s just a ‘formula.’ Anyone can do this.” That is where she is wrong. Small Business SAturday

In support of my bestie, next Saturday, November 24th, on Small Business Saturday I will be assisting her at her booth at the Holly Trolley Shopping in Fort Wayne. It’s a great  local program that sets up a ton of local small businesses from 7 am to 7 pm. They then offer a free trolley service between all the businesses so the locals can get some holiday shopping done. It’s a lot of fun, and many make the tradition of going each year to get the holidays started off right.

Sponge Baths with Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth

WARNING: Some pics not for the weak of heart or stomach

I bet that title got your attention! Who wouldn’t want a sponge bath by Chris Helmsworth?

Well, as you guys know I had surgery exactly a week ago today. Trust me when I tell you I have learned the importance of stretching. Memo noted, taken, memorized. Got it! I will never exercise without stretching again.

Went to the doctor today to get my monstrous bandage off, and it really made me ponder the things I have learned while sitting on my ever growing butt over the last week. Please learn through me, so you to won’t need a sponge bath from Chris Helmsworth (wait, that was supposed to make you listen, not make you want to hurt yourself)

Lesson 1: Sweatpants are your best friend. Especially the XXXL size!

This goes beyond the regular yoga pant love! One thing the docs neglected to tell me was that my bandage was going to be the size of Elephant Man’s foot. The ONLY pants I could get on were 2 pair of pajamas pants my bestie gave me that her mom didn’t wear anymore. If they hadn’t been TWO sizes too big, I would have spent this entire week pantless. Trust me, that option is NOT as glamorous as it seems. I mean LOOK at this thing! It’s huge!

Lesson 2: Sponge baths are overated!

Unless this gorgeous piece of man is administering said sponge bath, having to wash yourself using a washcloth and washing your hair in the sink is WAY overrated. The first thing I am going to do tomorrow is take a shower!

Chris Hemsworth

I am sad to report that Chris Hemsworth’s PR peeps never did get back to me about my sponge bath request. Hoping their response is still in the mail.

Lesson 3: Stitches are an amazing way to gross out your friends.

My daughter and my best friend took me to the doctor to get my elephant bandage removed. My stitches sure felt a LOT larger when they were in the bandage. Warning this next pic is not for the weak stomached.

Lesson 4: The world will not end if you sit your butt in a recliner for a week (or two)

As mom’s we are always on the go, and always taking care of everyone else. You know what I have done this week? Eat, take pains meds, sleep, sponge bath, waited for Chris to show up, and repeat.

I have caught up on my blog design, finished a few crochet projects, and even finished a few books that I have been meaning to read. Guess what?! My house is still standing. My kids are still getting fed, and my husband is still clothed.  The world DOES still go on when mom is not functional.
Lesson 5: Things that make the world all better

This week would’ve been so much harder with out my invalid survival gear. Thanks to the suggestions of so many Crunchy readers, I had QUITE the set up to help me stave off boredom.

Things that make invalid status better

  • Warm Fuzzy blankets
  • Lots of comfy pillows
  • Computer games
  • Books
  • and of course Steak and Shake Milk shakes!

Recovering from injury

Lesson 6: It’s exciting to be able to wear “real” clothes again

This week has consisted of sweaters, sweat pants, and no bra days. It will be nice ,now that I am in a cast again, to actually look like I can wear real clothes. I am actually craving a shower and my cute jeans! Does that make me sad?

Monday Quiz About Me 11/5

Monday Quiz about me

Monday Quiz about me

I have been having fun with Acting Balanced, and the Monday Quiz about me! It’s a fun way to get to know myself and other bloggers that you read. Here are this week’s questions:

1. What is your favorite thing about November?
2. What was the last thing that you bought that you regretted soon afterwards?
3. What is your go to snack food?
4. Do you believe that newspapers should charge for their online content?

And don’t forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

1. What is your favorite thing about November?
There are so many things that I love about November. The cooler weather, snow (it’s usually when we get our first snow in Indiana). It’s also my youngest daughter’s birthday, and of course we all love Turkey Day. I have my own ceremonial elastic pants just for that day. Ok, well that might be a tad of an exaggeration.

2. What was the last thing that you bought that you regretted soon afterwards?

This one is a toughy. I am awful about eating out. SO probably the last time I ate out. If I could kill that habit, then I would have a lot more money in my pocket.

3. What is your go to snack food?
My favorite at the moment is the Baked Pepperidge Farm four cheese crackers. I swear they are laced with crack! I could eat a whole box in less than a day.

4. Do you believe that newspapers should charge for their online content?

This is kind of an obscure question. They probably should, but I like the fact that they don’t. I love reading online news content, but I am WAY too cheap to pay to read the news.

My 5th question this week is …

5. What is the most embarrassing story your spouse has on you?

Oh, marriage isn’t marriage unless you give your spouse at least one juicy story to tease you with for the rest of your life. My story would probably have to be the time we went to New Orleans. This was actually before we were married, but to this day (six years later) he still is happy to share my little tale with whomever is within ear shot.

My story begins in the Hilton French Quarter New Orleans. I had won a regional sales award from my employer at the time. They were kind enough to fly us all down to New Orleans for a weekend trip. At the awards ceremony they had an open bar, just beer and wine. I “thought” I had been behaving myself because I didn’t want to get up there fall down drunk to accept my award.

I accepted my award along with the 14 other recipients, and managed not to embarrass myself. I thought I was in the home stretch. Boy was I wrong. By the end of the ceremony, I had already had 4 small glasses of wine in me. Then my co-workers thought it would be a great idea to go to O’Brian’s “the home of the hurricane”. First off, PAY ATTENTION when they call a drink after a force of nature. It is sure to end badly if you don’t.

Those four glasses of wine had me feeling like super woman, so not only did I order my very first hurricane, but I added a “floater” shot on top of it! We were with friends. We were out of town it was all good. That was until about half way through the drink every thing became a blur.

I remember somewhere in there professing “I wuv ewe” to my then fiancee, and trying to convince him to find some hoodoo priest to marry us on the spot. I even remember the walk of shame down canal street with my husband’s arm being the only thing keeping me up. I even remember yelling at him about not ripping my pants because they were my only pair of work pants.

What I don’t remember is much after that, but trust me Mr. Crunchy has taken the last six years helping fill in every teeny tiny detail about that night. He also has helped me make sure each and everyone of my friends knows them too.

What about you? Does your spouse have an embarrassing story they enjoy telling about you over and over again?

Daily Chef Bruschetta: Happy Birthday Italian Style! #MealsTogether #Cbias

Daily Chef Bruschetta

Not too many people actually know the story behind my youngest daughter’s name. The story begins when I was a little girl. Growing up with a common name, like Ashley, was really quite exhausting as a kid. I was constantly getting mixed up with other children, and never felt truly unique in my name. Having felt this way, I vowed to find names that were special and significant when I named my own children.

Daily Chef Bruschetta

My daughter’s name is Bayla. Her name was chosen for her Italian heritage on her father’s side. We adapted it from the name Bella, which means beautiful in Italian. We didn’t want people calling her Bella, a la Twilight. Instead we wanted it to be pronounced Bay- la; like the Italians do.

Bayla never tires of hearing the story behind her name. She is really proud of her Italian heritage, and loves sharing that story over and over. With her birthday coming up, we thought it would be a great way to surprise her with an Italian dinner party full of family, love, life, and of course bruschetta.

Daily Chef Bruschetta

To shop for our party, we headed over to Sam’s club to grab a few things. I wanted to make sure we had some of her favorites at the party. Bay really loves bruschetta and focaccia bread as well.

Daily Chef Bruschetta

When we were done, we had tons of goodies for the party. We grabbed an amazing Daily Chef Bruschetta to serve the family, plus penne pasta with Alfredo sauce, and the most amazing focaccia bread. We even had panna cotta for dessert. It was absolutely fabulous.

Daily Chef Bruschetta

Daily Chef Bruschetta

My eldest daughter was really excited about the party, and wanted to be “chef” for the day. She loves to cook. Her Italian grandmother would be very proud! It touched my heart that she wanted to help make her little sister’s day special, and that she put so much love into the meal that she prepared all by herself!

Daily Chef Bruschetta

Life is about family, love, and good food. It’s about spending time together and celebrating each other. Any occassion big or small, make sure you celebrate it with the ones you love. I know our family is stronger because we do.

Can’t keep a fighter down, well maybe you can!

Can't keep a fighter down

Can't keep a fighter downWell, today was judgement day. It was the day when I was to find out if my foot would be on the mend, or if I was to have surgery and given a one way ticket to sitting on my butt for more undisclosed amounts of time.

My foot had been feeling better, so I was hoping that the doc was going to tell me I had won what was behind door number one.Unfortunately, all I got was the goat behind door number two and what that means is surgery.

I am not a spring chicken anymore, but man I never thought an attempt to get back in shape would be such a pain in my butt….err foot. Through this journey I have definitely learned a lot, and I am really hoping that this surgery has a end result that is positive.

What have I learned from the last 6 months?

1. Definitely take stretching seriously! More than likely all this crud could’ve been prevented if I had taken the time to stretch. This mess started in MARCH. Now that we are talking surgery, I have at LEAST another 5 months in recovery. It could take up to a year!

2. Listen to your body, even when it makes you feel old: I am only 33, but my body is definitely not feeling like it used to. So when your mind is telling you are a rock star, but your body is saying “whoa, Nelly!” , you need to LISTEN. Not listening could help you into a “wonderful” situation like the one I am in.

3. It’s ok to ask for help: It is quite humbling to have to ask for help in and out of the shower, but it is so much less humbling than having to call paramedics to get your naked butt off the floor after you have broken something else. That’s just speculation on my part, but doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun.

4. The house not being clean will not kill you: Despite what my OCD keeps telling me, it is OK to sit on your butt and heal. Even moms need time to take care of themselves, and sometimes injuries and illnesses is our body’s way of doing that. Let those dishes sit.Plus, isn’t that what kids are for?

5. Be thankful for the little things: Being laid up for this long makes you crave things you usually take for granted, like walking or gardening. This that you used to do every day really seem like something you would just kill somebody to do. When you are all healed up, make sure to slow down and savour the moments!

6. Never give up! It royally sucks that I am going to have to have surgery, but in my life  I have learned that they can’t hold you down unless you let them. Take it easy, rest, heal, and enjoy a free week off full of great drugs! Plus, you are going to be waited on hand and foot and don’t even have to pay for it! People pay big bucks at a spa for that kind of treatment!

I really hope through this journey you guys have learned a thing or two so you don’t end up laid up like me, but on the bright side it will definitely mean I have more time to blog.  Since my butt is going to be making a permanent indention in the sofa, I might as well let you guys enjoy my drug induced anectdotes, no?

Monday Quiz About Me 2: All that is Crunchy

Monday Quiz about me
Monday Quiz about me
I love learning more about bloggers that I read, so I thought I would join in on the fun with Acting Balanced. Each Monday there will be different questions that I answer so that you can learn a little bit more about me, and feel free to share your answers. That way I can learn a little bit more about my great readers!!! Here are this week’s questions:
1. How often do you shop for groceries? Do you shop in one place or many?
2. How old were you when you had your first taste of alcohol?
3. How much TV do you watch?
4. How do you relieve stress?
My Answers:
1. How often do you shop for groceries? Do you shop in one place or many?
This is quite the random questions. I normally shop for groceries once a week, and normally go to one store. Having said that. I am completely engulfed with my ADD on some days, and there is never a doubt in my mind that I will forget something. Yes, even if I have a list.
That or I found out that my children have snarfed something that I was planning to make for dinner, or they left me without any milk or dog food. (No, they don’t eat dog food, well I at least HOPE not) All of this means, I normally get carted to the grocery store at least twice a week on average.
2. How old were you when you had your first taste of alcohol?
There is so many ways to ask this question. I have to say that the very first time alcohol hit my lips I was still in diapers. Yes, I am from the South, and we start drinking young. Totally kidding, about the last part anyway. My mom TO THIS DAY still has a picture of me in my diaper and nothing else with a can of Budweiser pressed to my lips. Maybe I was so traumatized by the experience that is why I still hate beer to this day!
3. How much TV do you watch?
This question is easy. WAY TOO MUCH! If it were not for TV, I would probably have time to get oh I don’t know laundry done. My DVR gets quite the workout out during the week. Some of my favorite shows are Smash, Glee, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, Castle…….need I go on?
4. How do you relieve stress?
I would love to say that I have figured this one out completely, but alas I haven’t. Being ADD and OCD makes me quite the neurot, and that means I am quite high strung. I have tried meditation (ADD kicks in in about 5 seconds). I have tried yoga (no wonder I ended up in a cast). I have even tried the whole bubble bath thing. ( Can we say mama Crunchy NEVER gets that much privacy). In then end, I have learned to love my neurotic chaos in all it’s glory. Stress relief in my house equals kids in bed and a calm blissful evening with a bottle of moscato.
5. If you were stuck on a desert island, what are three items you couldn’t live without?
First off, I would hope to never get stuck on a desert island because I am extremely fair skinned. So I guess the first thing I couldn’t live without would be sunscreen unless mama Crunchy wants to look like a boiled lobster even before I am bright enough to figure out I am SOL.
As much as I whine about them, I would have to say my family would be second. I love the fact that we are all really close, and actually enjoy each other’s company. I just hope they don’t go all Hunger Games on me, because being a little smooshy at the moment I would definitely be the first one they would eat.
Last thing would probably be, a comfortable place to sleep. Crunchy – minus sleep = better stay outta my way. I am not what you call a morning person to begin with, and add lack of sleep to that and you have one grumpy Crunchy. Trust me you can ask my family about this one!
What about you? How would you answer these questions? Then feel free to link up this week!

Monday Quiz About Me

Monday Quiz about me

Monday Quiz about me

You guys always hear me ramble about things in my life, so I thought I would join Acting Balanced in the Monday Quiz about me. It’s a great way for readers to get to know a little bit about me, Ashley aka Crunchy. Then you can answer the questions too so I can get to learn more about you guys!

1. What is the most interesting fact you have learned recently?
2. The alarm goes off on Monday morning.  What is your first thought?
3. What is the most memorable movie line of all time?
4. Describe a situation that always seems to try your patience.

And don’t forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

My Answers:

1. What is the most interesting fact you have learned recently?

This one is actually tough. I am learning all the time. Um, the most interesting fact I have probably learned lately is that whales are part of the dolphin family. My daughter Bayla is OBSESSED right now with dolphins. She is reading up on them in homeschool, and about every five seconds she is sharing a new fact she has learned about dolphins. She told me this the other day, and I didn’t realize that dolphins and whales were in the same family. Go figure.

2. The alarm goes off on Monday morning.  What is your first thought?

Get ready to go green with envy. I don’t have an alarm. My alarm in the morning is usually my bladder. Working from home, I pretty much set my own hours. Now that my kids are older, I usually get up before they do. So, I guess my first thought is “man, I gotta pee!”

3. What is the most memorable movie line of all time?

Man, I should’ve drank more coffee before answering these questions. Making my brain hurt. Most memorable movie line. There are only so many brain cells to spare for memory. I can’t say that I have a most memorable. “I’ll Be Back” from Terminator is always a favorite of mine to quote. I love scaring people with the thought of my return. Mwhahahah

4. Describe a situation that always seems to try your patience.

I could write a novel on this one! Between being short tempered (Irish here), OCD (like constant thought, not crazy organization), and ADD (look at the squirrel) there is pretty much NO patience in my being. I have managed to improve it to about 10 seconds, but being patient is not one of them. My patience is non-existant when it comes to ignorance and close minded people.

I really don’t get peeps that think their way is the one and only way. Being different and individual is what makes us who we are. I mean of course you have plus or minus societal norms. Not going to say a serial killer is “just who they are,” but plus and minus normal we should be able to be us without fear of some idiot harassing us.

5. What inspires you?

Being totally honest, I am not a naturally positive person. (Can anyone that is a smart ass be one? I will get back to you on that) Having to work to be positive, I am always searching for inspiration. Life is way to short to take things for granted, so I try to find inspiration anywhere I can. First and foremost my husband inspires me, (insert awwwws here). He is truly one of the most amazing people I have ever met.

He didn’t grow up with much, and definitely didn’t grow up with a strong sense of family. Despite that he has helped me raise our three children, and make a wonderfully happy home with me. He’s too hard on himself, and works hard each and every day.

Kindness is another thing that inspires me. Too many people are self involved nowadays. It really amazes me when I see some show genuine empathy for another person, or just do something to be kind. There needs to be more people like that in the world!

Ok, Crunchy peeps, now it’s your turn. Answer one, answer em all! How would you answer these questions!

It’s so important to protect your family

Blog Pics 008

I have talked about my family, and specifically how sick my youngest daughter is. One thing I may not have told you guys before is how passionate I am about making sure you have the right insurance. You are probably asking how can one be “passionate” about something as “boring” as insurance. I can’t explain why, but I can tell you that I am. There is nothing better in the world than knowing that your family is covered if something were to happen.

My feeling is so strong about insurance that I was actually licensed to sell insurance when I worked for a few mortgage companies. I had actually received several sales awards in my division for insurance because I believed whole heartedly that you need to have those supplemental coverages that protect you should someone in your family fall ill.

I am not just talking about health insurance, I am talking about insurance that covers everything else. When my husband found out he needed knee surgery a few weeks back, I looked into what short term disability he had. He was only covered for $150/week! That was after an 8 day waiting period.

My husband is the primary wage earner in our home, and I can assure you that we cannot afford to live off of $150/week! If his disability had been longer than a week, we would’ve definitely have been in some serious trouble! Thanks goodness he was able to go back to work today.

Being prepared for unplanned disabilities is so important, and that’s why I am taking advantage of the open enrollment period for our benefits. My husband’s surgery scared me so much that I am making sure that I am informed about our coverage and what supplemental coverages are available through his employer. If there aren’t any, I will definitely be looking into some!

Check out this infographic. It really opened my eyes! 2012_infographic_OpenEnrollment (1)

Think about this. Could you and your family live on $150/week? Scary isn’t it!
